On 17 September last year I was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer.

Back in June I ran a free webinar sharing my experience of symptoms, treatment and ongoing recovery.

I’m telling you this because, firstly, I feel ready and comfortable to do so but, importantly, I want to share my experience and offer support in terms of the practicalities that men often don’t like to discuss such as pelvic floor issues, incontinence, sex (straight/gay), erectile dysfunction – topics that can seem scary if you are having to explore them on your own.

Although I’d been seeing a urologist for almost a year, I was assured that my symptoms did not suggest cancer so you can imagine my shock, being told otherwise.

I was due for a biopsy in March 2020 but yes, you've guessed it – COVID. So the biopsy was delayed to September and bang! The big C.

After a very strange few weeks waiting for further tests to check whether the cancer had spread, you can imagine my relief to find it hadn’t.

I was then immediately scheduled for a Radical Prostatectomy (sounds radical indeed) on 9 October but damn COVID interfered again – the surgeon's wife caught it so he had to self-isolate for two weeks.

The op went ahead successfully on 25 October and due to the skill of a robot – guided of course by the most amazing surgeon – the cancer was removed and at the time of writing this my PSA (blood test) is undetectable and I’m not currently undergoing any further treatment.

Of course I am monitored every three months with the likelihood of radiotherapy and other treatments in the future.

But at the moment I feel incredibly lucky. I am fit and well and able to continue my personal practice of running, qigong and breathwork alongside my work as a personal trainer, mindful movement and breath coach.

In fact I never felt ill, tired or lost weight considering how long I must have been living with this growing cancer. I didn’t get any of what I thought were the usual warning signs.

I’m also lucky that I have so many supportive friends and a very close family who helped me through the whole process – in particular during the uncertainty of whether or not the cancer had spread and the possible different outcomes.

I’m also truly grateful for support groups such as prostatecanceruk.org, and the surgeon, nurses and hospital team that looked after me.

Now I want to give back in whatever small way that I can.

In this webinar I discuss, share, and guide you through some of the exercises, in particular qigong and Oxygen Advantage breathwork that really helped and continue to help me physically, mentally and emotionally.

I would really like to encourage open and frank discussion as I’ve found this can be so cathartic and indeed therapeutic!
